MILESTONES
Graham Herbert 350 games
Russell Jarvis 150 games
Over the first 7 rounds, Jervois has seen a couple of milestones. Russell Jarvis played his 150th senior game and Graham Herbert played his 350th senior game.
Over his football career, Graham has achieved many milestones. He was the leading goal kicker in the reserves in 1996, 1999, 2000 & 2002, he has won 4 reserves premierships in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004, and in 1998 he captained the reserves side. Graham has kicked over 700 goals in his career, became a Life Member and achieved 20 years senior playing service. He has co-coached the reserves side over the last two years and joined the committee this year.
Russell has also achieved many milestones during his football career. He was the league Vice Captain in 2004 & 2005. He has captained the League side in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. He was premiership captain in 2006 and 2007. Russell was the U17.5 assistant coach in 2006 when they won the premiership. He won the league Best & Fairest in 2006 and has also become a Life Member of Jervois.
Congratulations to both players - their dedication to achieve these milestones is a credit to them.
LOKAN & SCHENKE CUP
THE LOKAN CUP
TAILEM BEND VS JERVOIS
27th June 2009 at Tailem Bend
Tradition is a big part of the Tailem Bend and Jervois Football Clubs, and no other name epitomes that tradition – than the Lokan name. It doesn’t matter where the Clubs are on the Premiership table, a huge battle happens when the Lokan Cup is at stake. Over the past five years, Jervois have dominated this award, but Tailem Bend have some pride back and they are gunning to win back this trophy.
Merv Lokan started that tradition. He was captain of the Jervois A grade from 1932 to 1940, where Jervois won all of those Premierships. The war came and football was abandoned, but Merv was back at Jervois in 1946 until 1948 as captain coach. He was also President for the club in 1949 and 1950. He was awarded Life Membership of Jervois in 1948.
Merv’s two sons represented both Clubs. Bill played in the undefeated 1954 side for Tailem Bend, with Merv as Coach. Bill was captain-coach of Jervois from 1959 to 1961, winning the flag in 1959 and 1961. Bill won the 1958 Mail Medal whilst representing Jervois. Geoff was captain-coach of Jervois in 1962, 1963 and 1964, winning the Premierships in 1963 and 1964. Geoff played in the 1965 premiership side for Tailem Bend, with Bill as selector.
Geoff had the honour of being named captain of the RMFL Team of the Year in 1965. He also played in and was coach of the 1970 premiership team for Tailem Bend and was non-playing coach in their 1974 premiership season. Geoff won two Mail Medal whilst playing at Jervois in 1962 and 1964.
The 1974 Tailem Bend A grade premiership is very special to the Lokan family. Geoff was the coach, his son Stephen was a player, as was Bill’s son Robert, and Merv was a selector. Robert was also a premiership player in 1972.
THE SCHENKE CUP
JERVOIS VS IMPERIALS
30TH May 2009 at Jervois
Jervois and Imperials play for the Schenke Cup, which was named in honour of the late Warren Schenke, who was a legend in both Clubs and the RMFL.
Warren commenced playing for Jervois in 1946, and played an astonishing 350 games spanning 25 years. He was captain/coach of the A grade from 1966 until 1970, winning in 1966 and 1968 and was coach only in 1971 and 1972.
He played in 6 Premierships with the Bluds. Warren moved to Murray Bridge in 1972 and took over as coach of Imperials in 1974. He coached the Blues to 3 premierships in 1976, 1977 and 1978, as well as Reserves Premiers in 1976 and 1978. He also coached Imperials to runners up 3 times – 1975, 1979 and 1980.
Warren’s record with Imperials reads as 3 premierships from 6 grand finals, 7 seasons as reserves coach for 2 premierships from 5 grand finals.
Warren was a Life Member of the Jervois, Imperial and Redlegs Football Clubs, as well as Life Member of the RMFL. He had a total of 46 years involvement, with only 2 years off.
No other person has achieved this level of recognition in local football. Is it any wonder that these two Clubs have chosen to honour such a man?
